Here is what I learned today:

Two new ideas I learned about Pompeii are:
- The first stage of a volcanic eruption is known as the "plian stage." This stage was named after Pliny the Younger, a roman soldier who witnessed the Mount Vesuvius eruption and helped evacuate a small number of residents of Pompeii.
- Herculaneum was another city destroyed by the same Mount Vesuvius eruption. It is not as well known as Pompeii because they were not able to excavate it to the same degree as Pompeii. This is because an urban settlement was created on top of Herculaneum before it was discovered. There was also resistence from the volcanic material which made it difficult to excavate.

One navigational strategy I used to locate information within a website was:
I used the headings and subheadings to guide myself through the informational text. I also used the blue links that I had to click to bring me to a photo gallery and another blue link that brought me to a video where I could watch a computer simulation of what the Mt. Vesuvius eruption looked like.

One reliable source of information about Pompeii is :
PBS Nova Online. I was able to tell that this was a reliable website because it is a well known television network that gives accurate information. If a student did not know what PBS was they could read the "About Us" at the bottom of the page or use a search engine to research the PBS network.

One informational feature I found useful and developmentally appropriate for fourth graders studying this topic was the computer simulation of the volcanoe erupting because it gave a visual to the students of what it must have been like for those living in Pompeii.

Lesson Idea:

Exploring Pompeii

Internet Researcher: Date:_

Objectives
We have already learned some facts about Pompeii through Mary Pope Osborne’s book Vacation Under the Volcano. This Internet Workshop will allow you to explore more in depth what Pompeii was like as a city, and what occurred the day Mount Vesuvius erupted on August 24, 74 A.D. You will find some facts that are the same as what Jack and Annie discovered!

Take a Virtual Tour of Pompeii by visiting the site:
http://wings.buffalo.edu/AandL/Maecenas/italy_except_rome_and_sicily/pompeii/thumbnails_contents.html.
Write down some things you notice about the architecture of the buildings, the roads, housing, flooring, etc. What are some elements of architecture that are used often? Why do you think they use these elements? Do they serve a purpose? Are they used today? Why or why not do you think this is?

Explore the website:
http://www.thehumorwriter.com/Kids_Corner_--_Original_Storie/Ancient_Pompeii/ancient_pompeii.html.
What are some interesting and unique features this site has? What are some different ways the site gives us information on Pompeii? Have you seen these features on other websites you have visited? If so explain where and how it was used.

Using the same website from the last question, explore the Fun Websites listed at the bottom. Focus on one site in particular, and find two interesting facts to share with the rest of the class that were not discussed in the Ancient Pompeii website.

How were you able to navigate through the websites you visited? How did you make your way to a different site? How would you return to a site you have previously visited? Explain the strategies you used when visiting a new site.

Be creative!

Using what you learned today about Pompeii and all of the sites you visited, pretend that you are going to create a website about Pompeii. What information do you feel is most important to include? What tools or technology would you use on your website (pictures, videos)? Who would your website be for? (Children, adults) Be Specific and use a lot of detail in your explanations!
